Ancillary Task 2 - Film Poster

The second ancillary task we have to create is a cinematic film poster to advertise our film. We will be using photoshop software to create the poster using photographs we've taken ourselves and required of stock photo websites to create a final product that is representative of our film.

Research into Film Posters

A films poster an image representation of the whole film and attracts the audience to come and see it. Here's an example of a film in a similar genre and film concept, Twilight. Here's a deconstruction of the Twilight cinematic poster.

As a group, we all decided we would like to produce something similar to this for our poster due to the nature of the film being similar of that a young woman in love with two men, and both story's being a supernatural romance. This idea would attract the viewers as they would want to know the connections and story behind the characters and how a story like ours came to be. We also want to incorporate some idea's from two other film posters from the movies 'P.S I Love You' and 'The Time Traveler's Wife'. I've also done deconstructions of these posters and there will a scribd link to them below.

Photoshop Training

Before we can start developing our own poster we need to learn how to first correctly use Photoshop to enable us to present the best poster we can. We done this by following a tutorial to create a poster for a war movie. These are the tutorials we followed:

And here is the final developed poster that was made from following this:

Development Of Poster

To develop whats going to be on the poster we first have to create a flat plan for it, that contains the basic elements of what the poster will look like:

For the background of our poster we want to obtain a look of a bokeh effect similar to that of the Time Travelers Wife poster. There are couple ways of achieving this if you have an already established photo background, but we wanted to make it from scratch, so I found a couple of nifty tutorials to help us.

This is our version for the background of our poster:

To re-create a poster we need to make a mock up of the credits at the bottom of the poster, to do this we use a Steel Tongs font to create something like this:

We don't have as many credits to our film as this credit block was taken from a major picture but we will have enough (and some made up names too) to create a decent sized one. At first we began to use a character map provided by the website used to download the font, however, this map was inaccurate and we ended up having to find the characters ourselves.

We also had a request of one of the actors to cover her ear up showing through her hair, we covered this up using the cloning tool provided in photoshop. Here is the original version vs. the version in PS:

After

First Draft of Poster and Feedback

Here's our first draft of the movie poster that we will be getting feedback on to improve on. Here's the poster:

And this is the feedback that we received on our poster:

We've decided on some main goals to help our poster reach its full potential these are:

  • Re-Editing the three characters to make them look less photoshopped and blend them in with each other better.
  • Resize the text of the steel tongs and add logos
  • Resize the rest of the text, including the web address
  • We also want to give the poster a whole new look and reflect Twilight in a way.
The feedback we received was very helpful to seeing what we can change and why we should change them. This gave us a good realisation into what would make our poster a hell of alot better!

Re-Edits and Final Poster

If you can't tell the poster looks a lot different from the first one we decided, to make the image look less photoshopped we decided to use a different photo where the two characters are already together and leave our second male character off the poster due to him only being a supporting role we decided to leave him off the poster and give more focus to the main storyline with the two characters. Here's a deconstruction of the meaning behind our poster too:

Here are the improvements that we have made based upon the feedback:

Change of central image and darkened to look less photoshopped.

Resizing of the credit texts and adding of sponsor logos.
There is also now a blend with the background and the image.
Alignments of the actors name to they are in proportion to each other.

So this is the final product!
