Ancillary Task 1 - Film Review

This task is to create a mock magazine review for our film including a full film review. We will use Quark Express to produce the review following the conventions of a real magazine review. This review should also include a fully written review about the film that should be implemented into the finished product.

Magazine Deconstructions

Magazine reviews seem to follow a certain rule of thumb, and a constant theme. This is seen in 'EMPIRE' magazines 'In Cinemas' section of their books. Here are a couple of deconstructed versions of those. Here's one from an Empire's 2008 magazine:
These are the key elements that are seen in a films magazine review, specifically Empire as this is their house style. For our film review we've been talking about using this house style for our film review.

Film Review Construction

To help us create our film review, we used a tutorial on how to use the software Quark Express and create the film poster based around the information given in this video:

We used this tutorial then, to make a mock up of a film that is already coming out in cinemas soon to practice making the film review. Here is the construction process and product we made based on the soon to be released film, Paper Towns:
Adding in the in cinemas logo using alignments and text boxes.

Creating a run around, pull quote of a small quote from the review.

Adding the film information Box.
And here is the final product made from using this tutorial:

We then followed this same tutorial to make a mock up of our film review following the instructions to create the product. Before we start making though, we had to plan out what we wanted the poster to look like, this is our flat plan:

Construction Of Review

Adding the 'In Cinemas' Logo and Image screenshot image of the film.
Adding the review main body text.

Adding all the magazine 'furniture'

The final product in Quark Express

First Review Draft and Feedback

Here is the first draft of our magazine review, that contain lorem ipsum text to fill in the main body of the review for this version of the review:

And here's the feedback that we received based on the review:

Based on the feedback that we we're given we established that it is mainly aliment issues that need fixing and the text be changed to an actual review other than that we we're told that it is of a high standard and people agreed that because of the alignment issues only one or two marks would be dropped from the overall score out of ten.

Overall the feedback we were given was very helpful on spotting the things that we've missed to put in our review and give us a clear idea on how to improve on our work.

Re-Edits and Final Review

So here's our final film review: As you can see only a few changes were made to the review that being adding a small 'tag line' style headline of 'Best thing since the twilight saga' linking our film to a previous big film. We also had a touch around with all the magazine furniture to make sure everything is in order and lined up correctly within the rest of the review. We've also removed the Lorem Ipsum text and replaced it with our real review of the film.
